So, how is the creative sector really doing?

Ask any designer or creative and they’ll tell you that they’re aware of the latest trends and advances within the creative industry. But are they really aware when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of their sector? Did they know that the creative sector is the fastest growing sector in the UK? Did they know that it’s worth £3.2 billion a year? As a designer I can hold my hand-up and admit that I didn’t.

Every Friday the Clarity designers take part in 5@5 and this week it was my turn. These five minutes are devoted to sharing those previously mentioned trends and advances within the industry along with any inspiration we’ve unearthed that week. On a quest to pull-off my first 5@5 - I joined Clarity back in August - I combed through countless articles, blog posts and Pinterest boards until I finally stumbled across this article released by Design Week.

The article examines the creative sector as a whole, collating the facts and figures at the heart of the industry – something you don’t come across everyday. This was the perfect content to help me make a good impression on my new colleagues. Keeping in mind the five-minute time slot, I condensed the article down to these four notable statements:

  • Design is the UK’s fastest-growing creative sector and is worth £3.2 billion a year to the country’s economy
  • The creative industries sector as a whole is growing at 8.9% a year – nearly double the rate of the UK economy as a whole
  • The UK’s creative industries generate nearly £9.6 million an hour for the UK economy
  • The number of design jobs within the creative sector had jumped by 28.4% between 2011 and 2014

As expected my fellow creatives were just as impressed as I was and it left us all feeling distinctly proud. The statistics are monumental to say the least. And with figures released the following week stating that 90% of designers and creatives work full-time with over half of them being happy within their role, it’s clear to see that the creative sector is a rewarding thing to be a part of.

So, let’s embrace our creativity. Acknowledge our influence. Whether we’re doing it through the latest trends, industry advances or simply improving the economic growth of the UK, we’re making a difference and we’re a lucky bunch.
